Community Survey
Headed by Andrew Markus, the Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation at Monash has recently completed a 45 page study on patterns in Australia’s Jewish community.
This week, The AJN published some of the results, and this post will examine some of the more interesting findings:
1) Religious affiliation – As expected, Orthodox Jews are in the [...]

Questions for Robert Goot
The AJN reported today on the appointment of Peter Wertheim as Executive Director of ECAJ. The position is paid professional, as opposed to the voluntary position of President, currently occupied by Robert Goot.
Below are some questions I’ll be emailing to Mr Goot.

Talking Tachles 2: In Defence of the Right to Responsive Representation and Transparency
In the first post in this series, we asked a number of questions regarding representation, legitimacy and transparency. Some of the responses touched on themes such as apathy and whether there is indeed any “right” to representation at all.
Firstly, a straw man has been created in the suggestion that we are somehow disciples of Joseph [...]

Zionism on Campus: a New Approach
There is no more fertile ground than the Western campus for all manner of anti-Zionist activity. How such activity can be countered is an important question, not only because Israel and Zionists are misrepresented, but because often, people come to university without eve having known or cared about Israel or Jews, and their formative experiences [...]

Chag Sameach and Shabbat Shalom
We wish all our readers a wonderful, cheese-cake filled Shavuot and a restful Shabbat. We, at The Sensible Jew, plan on eating quiche.
We will resume serious posting on Sunday, May 31, when we answer reader questions about diaspora criticism of Israel, and the folly of agressive Israel advocacy on western campuses.
We will also address a [...]

Reader Response 8: Canada, Isi Leibler, and Advocacy
This post is another response to some very interesting issues put forward by the reader, Blistering. He/she argues that the Canadian Jewish experiment in restraint regarding public statements about anti-Zionist activity has been an abject failure and that anti-Semitism has risen as a result.
Blistering directs us to an article written by Isi Leibler for the [...]

Reader Response 6: Sha Shtil – Correcting a Misconception
One commenter, Blistering, summed up the sentiments of some of our readers in his last comment, here.
Blistering writes, “I’m not sure if you’re aware of this but the Canadian Jewish community tried to go with the PR approach in about 2004 and undertook the same course that you and others are advocating and it failed [...]

Reader Response 5: Israel, Kangaroo Courts, Unity, Speaking Out, and Subheadings
Today, we’ve not only experienced a major spike in readership, we have also seen a plethora of comments, some of which we’ll answer in this post.
Firstly, Israel is clearly integral to a Jew’s identity – whether said Jew is pro- or anti-Zionist. We find it hard to imagine a Jew without an opinion either way. [...]
The Community Survey: Civil Discussion, the “Volunteer” Canard, and Intimidation
Yesterday, Mum and I attended the afternoon session of Andrew Marcus’s discussion of the community survey, at Monash University.
I urge everyone who can, to get hold of a copy of the survey results. At the presentation, we were also offered “Key Findings from the 2006 Census” on Victoria’s Jews, collated by Markus and Tanya Aronov.
Markus’s [...]
