Dvir Abramovich in The Age: No Laughing!

Although Dvir Abramovich’s opinion column in today’s Sunday Age grossly misstates facts and makes various bizarre assertions, I would still like to thank him for the free publicity he has so generously given this blog, through his opinion piece.
Nevertheless, it is only right that [...]

In The AJN – The Holocaust: No Laughing!

I remember the story of two Jewish girls in their early 20s.
They were a bit tipsy on a weeknight when they arrived at one of the girls’ family home. The young ladies didn’t want to scandalise the parents, so they tried to compose themselves before entering.
“Stop laughing,” the girl whose house it was – let’s [...]

The Sensible Jew Salutes Antony Loewenstein.

Sometimes, we all need a bit of light relief. The Sensible Jew therefore  salutes Antony Loewenstein for providing us with a very silly blog piece about Israel.
Mr. Loewenstein begins with a horrifying description of some bad amateur theatrics in which Israeli leaders at a Birthright programme play the part of Palestinians and then try to [...]

An urgent request to Our Leadership for the Jewish reponse to anti-Indian violence

How is it that the only Jewish person to appear in the mainstream media condemning the recent violence against Indian students is David Vorchheimer? His letter to the editor, appearing in Saturday’s Age was a triumph of understatement, reason, and should be a template for the language with which our community’s leadership responds to this [...]

AJN 2: Colin Rubinstein vs David Langsam

This entry is part 2 of 2 in the series In the Australian Jewish News

Dr. Rubenstin, after years of faithful service at AIJAC, claims that his organisation was somehow bamboozled into making utterly self-defeating and inflammatory comments to the Australian media that transformed a silly 8 minute play into national news and enabled a partisan beat-up over a ridiculous Kennett painting.

AJN 1: Peaceful Protests

This entry is part 1 of 2 in the series In the Australian Jewish News

In this week’s Australian Jewish News, the protests at the 8 minute play were, of course covered. This gave the head of AUJS (Australian Union of Jewish Students), Stefan Oberman an opportunity to explain why exactly he thought yelling, placards, and raised fists were the answer.

While the article mentioned signs with admirable sentiments, such as, “Peace, salaam, shalom,” being waved, it neglected to mention other Jewish placards referencing dead Jewish children.

Michael Fagenblat’s Presentation at the Seven Jewish Children Reading

Seven Jewish Children is not an anti-Semitic play. On the contrary, its challenging message deserves to be heard, especially by Jews, Israelis and Zionists. However in the context of a Nakba commemoration for Australian Friends of Palestine, the play risks degenerating from being challenging and useful to useless self-validation. Here, then, are seven responses to Seven Jewish Children in the context of a commemoration marking what Palestinians call the Nakba–the Catastrophe–of 1948.

Rabbi Procel to pronounce on “Who is a Jew?” conundrum

Maccabi Australia Incorporated (MAI), in a flash of inspiration, is going to enforce the Jews-only policy in its clubs. As if Jews and sport weren’t a bizarre enough mix, there are actually non-Jews who want to be part of these clubs.

8 minutes of terror

The thing is, it’s so bad it’s funny.

And anyone who doesn’t already have a problem with Jews can see it. Anyone who does have a problem with Jews is not going to hear our venerable leader, Jeremy Jones of the Australia/Israel and Jewish Affairs Council, and think, “Gee… I’ve been wrong about you people all along!”

We’re talking about a an 8 minute play. It’s just another one of those cultural expressions of the evils of Israel (but not Jews – some of their best friends are Jews).

Some lady named, Caryl Churchill wrote it. Who? Let’s just say that if our resplendent leader, Mr. Jones had not screamed, “FIRE” yet again in the crowded theatre of multicultural discourse, we would never have heard of Caryl Churchill, and neither would you…
